In 2009, BASMA took a significant step forward by establishing the first dedicated Pediatric Oncology Unit in Syria. With the current maximum capacity of 40 inpatient beds and 12 outpatient chemotherapy chairs, the unit provides free of-charge state-of-the-art comprehensive multidisciplinary treatment to Syrian children under the age of 18 who are battling cancer. Since its inception, over 3100 patients have been enrolled in this life-saving program. The unit currently accommodates approximately 40% of Syrian children who are newly diagnosed with cancer. A study conducted at the end of 2023, which analyzed cases of admitted children between 2009 and 2019, reported a survival rate of 76% across all types of cancer.

The team of the unit includes highly qualified pediatric oncologists, surgeons specialized in complex procedures like limb-salvage surgeries, radiation therapists, radiologists, well-trained pediatric oncology nurses and a psychosocial support team.
